dB to Bits Calculator

This tool calculates effective number of bits (ENOB) in an Analog-to-digital converter from the Signal Noise and Distortion (SINAD).

Formula

ENOBbits = (SINADdB – 1.76)/6.02

Example Calculation

For a SINAD of 60 dB, the ENOB is equal to 9.67. Let’s take a look at the data sheet for a practical ADC.

Using the SINAD value of 72.2 dB, we get 11.7 effective bits – consistent with the table above.
