You set up your eSIM, the screen says “Activating,” and hours later it is still saying exactly that. No service, no progress, just a spinner that never finishes. An activation that hangs for hours is a clear sign something has stalled, but it is usually fixable without much fuss. Here is why it gets stuck and how to push it through.

Why Activation Hangs
When an eSIM sits on “Activating” for hours, the phone has the profile but cannot complete the final step of bringing the line live on the carrier’s network. The process is waiting on something it cannot reach: a stable connection, a carrier server, or a provisioning step that has not finished. It is not normal for activation to take hours. A genuine activation completes in seconds to a few minutes, so a long hang means the process is stuck rather than slow.
Step 1: Confirm a Strong Connection
Activation needs a stable internet connection to talk to the carrier. A weak or intermittent connection can leave the process hanging indefinitely.
Connect to a strong Wi-Fi network. If you are relying on an existing cellular line, make sure it has a solid signal. Move away from dead zones and avoid congested public networks. Once you are on a reliable connection, the stalled activation may complete on its own within a minute or two.
Step 2: Toggle Airplane Mode
This is the quickest way to nudge a stuck activation forward.
Turn Airplane Mode on, wait 30 seconds, then turn it off. This forces the phone to drop and rebuild its network connection, which often breaks the activation out of its hung state and lets it finish.
Step 3: Restart the Phone
If Airplane Mode does not help, restart the device. Power it off, wait 30 seconds, and power it back on. A reboot clears the stuck process entirely and reloads the eSIM profile, giving activation a clean attempt. After the restart, check whether the line has come live.
Step 4: Update Carrier Settings and Software
An outdated carrier settings file or operating system can leave activation hanging.
On iPhone, connect to Wi-Fi, then go to Settings, General, About and install any carrier settings update that appears. Check Settings, General, Software Update for a pending iOS update as well. On Android, install any pending system update. Restart after updating and let activation try again.
Step 5: Give the Carrier Time to Provision
If the connection and software are fine, the hang may be on the carrier side. Their system may still be provisioning your line, which can leave the phone waiting.
This is common right after buying a plan. If you have just purchased the eSIM, give the carrier up to an hour to finish setting up the line, then toggle Airplane Mode or restart to prompt the phone to check again. Activations bought late at night can take longer to provision.
Step 6: Remove and Reinstall if It Stays Stuck
If activation is still hanging after a connection check, a restart, and a reasonable wait, the profile may be in a stuck state that a reinstall will clear. Only do this once you can get the profile back.
Confirm with your carrier that they can re-issue or push the eSIM, then remove the stuck profile under your cellular settings. Reinstall using a fresh QR code or your carrier’s setup option. A clean reinstall gives activation a fresh start and resolves most lingering hangs.
Step 7: Contact Your Carrier
If activation will not complete after every step, the carrier needs to look at their side.
Have your account details and your device EID ready, found under Settings, General, About on iPhone or in the about section on Android. Ask the carrier to confirm your line is fully provisioned and active on their system, that there is no hold on the account, and that the eSIM is correctly assigned to your device. They can often complete the activation remotely or re-issue the profile so it activates cleanly.
A Quick Order to Try
For the fastest result, do this. Get on strong Wi-Fi, toggle Airplane Mode, then restart. If it is still stuck, update carrier settings and software and restart again. If you just bought the plan, give it up to an hour. If activation still hangs after that, call the carrier.
When to Escalate
If you have waited, restarted, reinstalled, and the carrier confirms your line is active and assigned to your device, ask them to release and re-issue the eSIM with a fresh profile. An activation that hangs on a confirmed-active line usually points to a stuck profile that only a clean re-issue fixes. If a re-issued eSIM still hangs, the device manufacturer can help rule out a software or hardware fault.
An activation stuck for hours almost always clears with a connection fix, an Airplane Mode toggle, or a restart. When it does not, the carrier can complete or re-issue the activation, so a long hang is rarely permanent.
