eSIM Disappeared After an iOS Update: How to Restore It

You update your iPhone, it reboots, and your eSIM line is gone. No service, no number, and the line you set up has vanished from settings. This is alarming, but in most cases the eSIM is not actually lost. The profile is tied to your account on the carrier’s servers, and there are several reliable ways to bring it back. Here is what happens and how to restore it.

Why an Update Can Wipe the eSIM

An iOS update occasionally interferes with the eSIM in one of two ways. Most often the profile is still on the device but has become inactive or hidden by a glitch in the update process, and a reset or restart restores it. Less often, a restore from backup or a major version update fails to carry the eSIM across, because eSIM profiles are not always included in iCloud or device backups. Either way, the line itself still exists on the carrier’s system, which is what makes recovery possible.

Knowing this matters because it changes your approach. You are not recreating a line from scratch. You are reconnecting your device to a line the carrier already holds.

Step 1: Restart and Check Again

Before anything else, restart the iPhone. Power it off, wait 30 seconds, and power it back on. Update glitches are frequently cleared by a single reboot, and the missing line sometimes reappears on its own.

After the restart, go to Settings, Cellular and look for the line. If it is back, toggle Airplane Mode on and off to re-register on the network, then confirm you have service.

Step 2: Re-add the eSIM From Your Account

If the line is still missing, the simplest recovery on modern iPhones is to re-add it without a new QR code. Go to Settings, Cellular, then Add eSIM. iOS may offer to set up a line from a nearby device or from carriers already linked to your Apple Account. If your carrier supports it, the missing line appears here and can be reinstalled in a tap.

This works because the carrier still recognises your device and account, so no fresh activation is needed.

Step 3: Check for a Carrier Settings Update

An outdated carrier settings file after a major iOS jump can leave the eSIM in limbo.

Connect to Wi-Fi, then go to Settings, General, About. If a carrier settings update is available, a prompt appears within a few seconds. Install it, then restart and check the line again. This small step resolves a surprising number of post-update eSIM problems.

Step 4: Reset Network Settings

If the profile is on the device but stuck, a network settings reset often frees it. Go to Settings, General, Transfer or Reset iPhone, Reset, then Reset Network Settings.

Be aware this clears saved Wi-Fi passwords and paired Bluetooth devices, so note anything you need first. It does not delete your eSIM. After the reset, restart the phone and check Settings, Cellular once more.

Step 5: Contact Your Carrier for a Re-issue

If the line has genuinely been removed from the device and does not reappear through your account, the carrier can restore it. This is the definitive fix and resolves the cases the earlier steps cannot.

Have your account details and your device EID ready. Find the EID under Settings, General, About. Ask the carrier to do one of three things: confirm the line is still active on your account, push the eSIM to your device remotely using the EID, or issue a fresh activation code or QR code. Because the line already exists on their system, this is routine for them.

What to Avoid During Recovery

Do not delete any partial or “no service” eSIM profile that is still showing, unless the carrier has confirmed they can re-issue it. Deleting it can turn a simple glitch into a full re-issue. Similarly, do not erase the phone or do a full factory reset hoping it will fix the line, since that removes any profile still on the device and makes recovery harder rather than easier.

How to Protect the eSIM Before the Next Update

A few habits reduce the chance of losing the line again. Before installing a major iOS update, make a note of your eSIM details, including the carrier, the line name, and any activation or QR information your carrier originally provided. Keep that information somewhere safe so a re-issue is quick if needed.

Update on strong Wi-Fi with a good charge, and let the update finish fully before opening cellular settings. If you are moving to a new iPhone rather than just updating, use Apple’s eSIM Quick Transfer or your carrier’s official transfer process instead of relying on a backup to carry the profile, since backups do not always include the eSIM.

When It Still Will Not Come Back

If you have restarted, re-added from your account, updated carrier settings, reset network settings, and the carrier still cannot restore the line, escalate within the carrier. Ask for a supervisor and explain that an iOS update removed a confirmed-active line and you need it re-issued. A line that exists on the carrier’s system can always be pushed back to your device, so there is no permanent loss.

If the carrier confirms everything on their side is correct but the iPhone still refuses to hold the profile, contact Apple Support. A persistent failure to install a valid eSIM after an update can point to a software fault that Apple can diagnose, occasionally through a clean reinstall of iOS.

In nearly every case the eSIM is recoverable. The profile lives with your carrier, not only on the phone, so a restart, an account re-add, or a carrier re-issue brings it back. Work through the steps in order and the line returns without you losing your number.
